Different Arena, Same Approach.

In Mary Ellen's classroom, "They weren't just students. They
were her "kids." And that same caring approach is making
a positive difference today throughout Maryland.

When people used to ask Mary Ellen Flaherty how many kids she has, her answer was often shocking. “Fifty-four” she’d say. “And they’re all 12, 13 and 14 year-olds.” Of course, this answer was somewhat of a joke, but it also reflected her strong commitment as a teacher. She explains: “They were never just students to me. I always called them my “kids” and I cared deeply for each and every one of them.”

Mary Ellen’s desire to become a teacher was born out of the embarrassment of being sent out to the hall for not knowing an answer in her own classroom in second grade. As a young girl, she struggled with an undiagnosed learning disorder. So when she overcame those obstacles and earned her teacher’s credential, bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree, she vowed to never belittle a student in a similar manner.

Instead, Mary Ellen’s goal was to take ownership of her kids’ educational experience and make learning fun. She thrived on being looked to as a leader and the “answer” person. Long story short, Mary Ellen approached her teaching career with a genuine passion for what she did, and it showed. As a testament to the impact she made during that time, some of her students still keep in touch with her to this day! “In order to be good at it, you had to really put in a lot of work with each student,” she says. “It was very rewarding.”

After many years in education, Mary Ellen sought a new professional challenge. She turned her sights to real estate and brings a similar brand of genuine care and commitment to each and every one of her clients. Of course, teaching English and helping people buy and sell homes are two totally different endeavors, but Mary Ellen’s approach is much the same.

“I take a vested interest in the lives of every single one of my clients,” she says. “I don’t view my role as simply helping people buy or sell a home. It’s more than that.  It’s about listening to people’s goals and helping them achieve their lifestyle they desire.”

Much like in the classroom. Mary Ellen thrives on providing people with all the answers and insight they need to make the best decisions for their future. She protects her client’s interests throughout every step of the transaction and shares her unique knowledge as a longtime local resident. She’s a true leader who you’ll be happy to have on your side when making one of life’s most important investments.
